Classic geography

Most people think the Cox Classic is largely a New Jersey event. And most people would be correct: The event takes place in New Jersey, and 50% of 2004's field of 703 golfers came from the Garden State.

But where did the other 50% come from? To answer "from around the country" would not be an overstatement. In fact, the Cox Classic actually drew participants from 24 states. Beyond New Jersey, the other states sending the most representatives were New York (190), Pennsylvania (38), and Massachusetts (18). One of the biggest surprises: Florida sent as many golfers as Connecticut (14).

What about the other 80 or so golfers? They were busy chalking up frequent flier points by traveling from the following states: Texas, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, California, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, Washington D.C., Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington state.
