The Architects
The original 27 hole complex, incuding the River Course, was designed by Hal Purdy and opened in 1965. Purdy, once a construction supervisor for Robert Trent Jones, Sr., has designed many outstanding courses in the Northeast. The Club was expanded to 36 holes in 1989 with the addition of the Meadow Course by renowned architect Brian Silva.
Fiddler's Elbow Country Club: a brief history...
Founded in 1965, this private corporate country club offers executives an escape from the halls of industry and commerce to the amenities of fine dining, superior golf and business facilities. As we look ahead, we are poised to provide our membership an atmosphere conducive to both formal and informal exchange of ideas where business and social relationships can be nurtured.
A Quiet Golf Treasure, a Unique Corporate Asset
Its fascinating history, picturesque grounds and superb facilities make Fiddler’s Elbow Golf and Country Club a most memorable place to visit. Located in New Jersey’s ecologically rich Upper Raritan Watershed, Fiddler’s property is divided between Somerset and Hunterdon Counties by the winding and twisting waters of the Lamington River, a branch of the Black River. Interestingly, it was the waterway that gave Fiddler’s its most unique name. At a town meeting to officially dub the course, the Black River Country Club, a club attorney, reviewing an old map of the property, noticed a spot south of the existing clubhouse marked “Fiddler’s Elbow”. Sure enough, at this point the Lamington made a bend resembling the arm of a man playing a fiddle. The owners immediately adopted the new name and it has since enjoyed a niche in the local lore.
Even before the first golf ball was driven down its fairways, Fiddler’s Elbow was recognized around town as a place of sport. The English manor house was built of Pennsylvania fieldstone on Rattlesnake Bridge Road in Bedminster Township, by Fredrick Moseley, a New York investment banker. Throughout the early part of the century the Moseley Estate, as it was called, celebrated elaborate fox chases complete with foot bassets, foxhounds and horses. The manor house, along with a two-story addition built in 1968, is now the Fiddler’s Elbow clubhouse.
The estate was run as a dairy farm until 1965 when Hal Purdy designed the 27 holes that constituted the original Red, Blue and Green courses. In 1990, the 9 hole Silver course opened and the Green course was renamed the Gold course in honor of the regal designs of Brian Silva. Rees Jones began the work on a third course in 1992 and on July 1, 1994, Fiddler’s Elbow could claim 54 holes of golf, making it the largest golf facility in the state. The distinction warranted another name change: the Blue-Red course, designed around the Lamington River, became known as the River course; the Gold-Silver course was christened the Meadow course in light of its former use as a pasture; the newest links, nestled safely within a plantation of white pines, stately beeches, oaks and other hardwoods, was aptly named the Forest course.
With its tremendous diversity in landscape, the Club’s relationship with nature has become an increasingly important concern over the years. Management has been dedicated to protecting and maintaining this delicate balance and as a result, the Club was recognized in June, 1995 as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the first to be fully certified in the state of New Jersey. Sponsored by the Audubon Society of New York State, in cooperation with the United States Golf Association, the sanctuary program promotes ecologically sustainable land management practices and the conservation of natural resources on the properties of participating golf courses.

Fiddler’s Elbow has continued to set the standard as a private corporate country club over the past 40 years. Serving the needs of its member executives and guests for business meetings, conferences, golf outings and business entertainment, Fiddler’s Elbow is a valuable business resource and investment.
